Certified Russian school diploma translation in the UK

Need your Russian аттестат or school-leaving certificate translated into English for a UK college, university, employer or official application?

Locate Translate can assess your school certificate, subject-and-grade supplement and certification requirements. Send a readable copy and tell us who will receive it—we'll confirm the appropriate translation service and provide a tailored quote.

For a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability, Russian documents may qualify for a translation waiver. Check this before ordering a translation.

Understand the Russian qualification

Which Russian school certificate do you have?

Russian school-leaving qualifications are different from university degrees. Identify the document type before deciding what to translate or which UK application it supports.

01 / GRADE 9

Аттестат об основном общем образовании

Certificate of Basic General Education

Generally awarded after completing Grade 9 in the Russian school system. It records completion of basic general education and may be issued with a separate grade supplement.

02 / GRADE 11

Аттестат о среднем общем образовании

Certificate of Secondary General Education

Generally awarded after completing Grade 11. It is a secondary school-leaving qualification, not a university degree, and normally has an accompanying record of final grades.

03 / GRADE RECORD

Приложение к аттестату

Certificate supplement / grade record

The separate supplement may list subjects studied and final marks. Universities and other recipients may want it translated alongside the certificate itself.

Older records can use different wording. For example, some older school certificates use Аттестат о среднем (полном) общем образовании. We'll work from the actual wording, issue date and document type. See the Russian qualification reference catalogue for historical examples.
Translation accuracy

We look beyond the certificate title

A useful English translation needs to represent the information on the actual Russian document, including any supplementary pages. A recipient may want both the school-leaving certificate and a full list of subjects and results.

Care is needed with names written in Cyrillic, dates, grading conventions, institutional names, official signatures and stamps. We can discuss a consistent name spelling if you have supporting identity documents.

Russian marks should be represented as they appear on the original. A translator should not independently convert them into UK GCSE or A-level grades or claim a UK equivalence without a separate recognised qualification assessment.

Important before ordering

UK ENIC may not require you to buy a Russian translation

UK ENIC includes Russian in its Translation Waiver Service for people applying for a Statement of Comparability. According to UK ENIC, the waiver for Russian documents is included at no additional charge. This allows eligible applicants to submit their qualification documents in Russian without ordering an English translation specifically for that service.

However: the waiver does not produce an English translation and applies to the UK ENIC Statement of Comparability process, not automatically to admissions departments, professional bodies, employers or other recipients.

Ask the actual institution whether it needs a translated attestat and supplement. Even if UK ENIC can assess your documents without a translation, your university or employer might still require one for its own records.

Applications and admissions

Where a Russian-to-English school certificate translation may be needed

The receiving organisation sets its own document and translation requirements. Confirm what it needs before purchasing translation or additional certification services.

01 / ADMISSIONS

Colleges and sixth forms

Institutions may ask for a readable English version of school results, subjects and the qualification awarded.

02 / UNIVERSITIES

University applications

Admissions teams may request both your attestat and supplement. Their translation and evidence policies vary.

03 / EMPLOYMENT

Jobs and apprenticeships

An employer may want to understand completed education and the qualifications shown in Russian.

04 / RECOGNITION

Qualification comparison

Check UK ENIC's waiver first if you are applying for a Statement of Comparability.

05 / OFFICIAL USE

Document submissions

Some applications require signed certified translations or further document checks.

06 / OTHER RECORDS

Academic grade history

The recipient might also need the supplement, past records or related study documentation.

Certification and legalisation

Certified translation, notarisation and apostille are different

For a UK recipient, a certified translation may include a statement confirming the English text accurately represents the Russian original, with the translator's relevant identifying details. Requirements vary between institutions and application routes.

A notarised translation or an apostille is a separate process, and neither is automatically required for every Russian school certificate. An apostille concerns authentication of an eligible official signature, seal or stamp rather than the language accuracy of a translation.

If documents were issued in Russia and are being submitted in the UK or elsewhere, confirm the receiving authority's legalisation requirements and the appropriate issuing-country procedure. Do not assume a UK apostille can be applied to a Russian-issued original.

See our certified translation services for general service information.

Before ordering

Ask the receiving institution

“Do you require a full certified English translation of both the Russian school certificate and its grade supplement? Must the original also be authenticated, notarised or apostilled?”

Getting this requirement in writing helps avoid paying for an unnecessary service or submitting the wrong format.

Simple ordering process

How to request a Russian school diploma translation

We assess the document and recipient requirements first, then confirm what is included in the quote.

STEP 01

Send the certificate

Upload a complete scan or clear photographs, including the supplement.

STEP 02

Specify its use

Tell us which UK organisation is receiving it and what certification it requires.

STEP 03

Review the quote

We confirm scope, language, delivery format and available timing.

STEP 04

Receive the translation

Work proceeds to the agreed translation and certification requirements.

Price and timeframe: Costs depend on the certificate and supplement, word count, legibility, certification and delivery requirements. We won't invent a fixed rate or promise universal acceptance; send the documents for a project-specific quote.
Frequently asked questions

Russian school certificate translation FAQs

What is an attestat in Russia?

An аттестат is a school certificate. A Grade 9 аттестат об основном общем образовании and a Grade 11 аттестат о среднем общем образовании represent different stages of general education.

Can you translate a Russian Grade 9 certificate?

We can review a Grade 9 certificate of basic general education and any accompanying supplement for Russian-to-English translation. Tell us which organisation requires it.

Can you translate a Russian Grade 11 school-leaving certificate?

Yes, we can assess a Grade 11 certificate of secondary general education and its supplement. These are school qualifications, not university degree certificates.

Does UK ENIC need a certified English translation of my Russian certificate?

For a Statement of Comparability, UK ENIC currently lists Russian among the languages eligible for its Translation Waiver Service without an additional waiver charge. It is not a general exemption from other organisations' translation requirements.

Should the school diploma and grade supplement both be translated?

That depends on the recipient. A supplement often contains subjects and final grades that do not appear on the certificate face. Ask whether the organisation requires the complete set.

Will my Russian qualifications automatically equal UK GCSEs or A-levels?

No. Translation represents the document's content; it is not an official qualification equivalence assessment or a guarantee of admission or employment eligibility.

Do I need notarisation or an apostille?

Not automatically. The receiving organisation and destination jurisdiction determine whether extra authentication is required. Certification of translation accuracy is a separate question.

Can I send scans, and how soon can you deliver?

Clear scans or photos are suitable for an initial assessment. Send all pages and your deadline so we can confirm a quote and the available turnaround. The recipient may separately require original documents.
