02 / COURT

Court orders and judgments

German or English judicial documents, orders, decisions and procedural correspondence.

03 / CLIENT RECORDS

Personal and official records

Relevant certificates, identity-related documents and other case evidence issued in German.

04 / CORRESPONDENCE

Solicitor and authority letters

Legal notices, correspondence, requests and case-related communications.

05 / AGREEMENTS

Contracts and powers of attorney

Documents whose terms or authorisations need to be understood across languages.

06 / CASE FILES

Exhibits and supporting bundles

Selected evidence, annexes and multilingual materials where only some parts may need translation.

Translation for legal purposes

Accuracy, context and the receiving court's requirements

German and English legal terms are not always direct equivalents. Translating Klage, Beschluss or a procedural reference requires attention to the type of proceeding and the document's source jurisdiction, not just a dictionary substitution.

A translation should preserve parties' names, numbered paragraphs, citations, dates, qualifications and the meaning of the source. For an evidential document, omissions or mistaken terminology can affect legal review and cause avoidable queries.

Certification may be requested by a solicitor, court or receiving organisation. The required declaration, format and delivery method should be confirmed with the recipient; a certificate of translation accuracy does not guarantee admission or acceptance as evidence.

The translation communicates the source; it does not establish that the original is legally valid or provide legal advice.

England and Wales · LAA guidance

Legal aid translation costs: what solicitors should know

The Legal Aid Agency's civil and criminal legal aid guidance explains cost assessment and remuneration. The Civil Finance Electronic Handbook, March 2026, section 10.18 addresses interpreting and translation costs for relevant civil matters.

For translation in relevant certificated matters, the handbook describes £100 per 1,000 words as a rate considered reasonable in the context of prior authority. It also states that claims should specify the rate and number of words, or the hourly rate and time spent.

That guidance is not a blanket fee for all legal aid translations, not a price offered by Locate Translate and not a promise that the LAA will reimburse a particular quote. Your firm must confirm the work is necessary, allowable and properly authorised under the applicable funding arrangements.

England and Wales LAA guidance should not be assumed to govern Scottish, Northern Irish, privately funded or otherwise differently funded matters.

Frequently asked questions

German legal aid translation FAQs

Do you translate German witness statements for legal aid cases?

We can review German witness statements and other case documents for translation into English, or the reverse direction. Send the document, recipient requirements and deadline for a tailored quotation.

Can your quote include a word count and rate?

Tell us the format required by your solicitor or funding team. For relevant civil LAA assessment, official guidance expects either a word count and rate or a time-based calculation. We can assess what is appropriate to show in the quote.

Does the LAA automatically cover German translation costs?

No. Whether a translation is an allowable disbursement depends on the legal aid scheme, case circumstances, reasonableness and relevant authority or assessment. The instructing solicitor should verify the requirements.

Is £100 per 1,000 words your translation price?

No. It is a reasonableness benchmark discussed in the LAA's March 2026 Civil Finance Electronic Handbook for certain certificated matters. Our quote depends on the document, language direction, complexity, certification and timing.

Can I request German-to-English and English-to-German translation?

Yes, both directions can be considered. Please identify the exact direction for each document and any legal terminology guidance available from the instructing solicitor.

Is a certified translation always needed for court?

No single certification format covers every court document and legal matter. The solicitor or receiving court should confirm whether a signed declaration, full certified translation or another formal step is required.

Can you provide an interpreter for a German-speaking client?

That is a separate service from written translation. Visit our German legal aid interpreting page to enquire about a spoken-language assignment and its duration, format and location.

How quickly can a translation be delivered?

Delivery depends on the document size, legibility, technical complexity, certification and availability. Tell us the court or submission deadline and we will confirm feasible options before quotation.
